Why I Think People Are Dicks.
Why are people jerks? Why do people pay so much attention to stupid things like reality television and celebrity drama?
Easy. Because everyone is afraid to be human.
Human means vulnerable. It means being in reality, constantly erring and having to be assaulted from all sides by the cacophony of probability, society, luck, misfortune and perceived control. Being human means we have to think really hard about who we are, what we are, what we are saying and the others around us and, at the end of the day, we all have one thing in common. But we're all scared. Scared, uneducated and unaware of what rights we have. Check out Don't Stay In School for a good idea on what the education system typically provides us: Boyinaband's Don't Stay in School
We're all lost.
We've got a pit in our souls that cries out for purpose, that sees the injustices of the world and wants to be the hero of the fantasies, wants to be the defiant voice that will always be remembered. The problem is that no one knows how to do it.
So, we do what is manageable. We pay attention to things that are inconsequential. We act like jerks to people who can't fight back, we judge, we hate because we are scared of what we are. The responsibility of the whole world is on us all and it is steadily declining, but none of us know how to take that first step. None of us know what to do.
And those of us that do are too scared that they'll be silenced before that second step ever comes. We want to be acknowledged, but the easiest way to do that is to be an asshole. I've wondered if people who are trolls or dicks on the Internet started doing it just because they know it will get them some attention -- we all want to be acknowledged as individuals, an entity who might be lonely and lost.
The majority of us are truly lonely and lost. We don't know how to find a way to fill that hole, to change the world.
So, why bother giving a shit?
Being human is agonizing, but the small times when you can actually change something or be kind to a stressed retail worker or leave and impression? I think they're worth it.
